  • During the recent Flag Day Celebration, Lyons Elks Lodge No. 869 recognized three area students.  During the past academic year, students of the Lyons Central School District participated in the Elks Americanism Essay Contest.
The theme for the contest was “What does the National Anthem mean to me?” Students Jordan Hornbeck, Derrick Tandle and Kyla Paige, the first place winners, read their winning essays and were presented with Certificates of Recognition by National Elks Leader Gary A. Rogers, Elks State Vice President Scott Seltzer, and local Elks Leader Julie Wunder.
During the ceremony members of the American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars properly disposed of retired U.S. flags. Also during the ceremony the Lyons High School Band under the direction of Camille Clark provided musical selections. Local members of local Girl and Boy Scout troops also participated by displaying the various flags in our nation’s history.
