  • The Beautification Committee of the Walworth Hamlet Association is pleased to announce Leighton and Nancy Bel have earned the “Pride of the Hamlet” award for October. The Bels will have the Pride of the Hamlet Blue Ribbon sign displayed in their yard at 2192 Church Street in Walworth. A photo of their home will be featured on the WHA website.
The fall decorations in the Bel’s front yard are beautifully done.  There are huge, colorful gourds amidst tall, dried corn stalks.
Nancy is a Walworthian by birth and has lived in various homes in and around the hamlet until they moved into their current home in 1956, to assist her ageing parents. Leighton and Nancy were married in this home, too.  Many of the features inside on the first floor are the same as when her parents lived there. As a matter of fact, they still have the original oak front door her great-grandfather installed. If you compare photos of the house during it’s earlier days, you’ll notice how her father enclosed the big front porch.
The kitchen features a  140-year-old oak table that can seat 20 people with all it’s leaves added, but, usually, it has only two leaves in it.
Upstairs, the Bel’s have renovated several bedrooms and installed a bathroom.
“My decorating motif,” Nancy says, “ is a comfortable, some-what Colonial.”
One of the interesting features of the Bel’s front yard is a half-moon, berm garden that provides plenty of colorful flowers throughout the growing seasons  and interesting patterns during the snowy months.
All members of the Walworth Hamlet Association are eligible for the Pride of the Hamlet award. One home owner will be picked each month through October. Next on the WHA Beautification Committee’s agenda  is the holiday decorating contest. The association encourages homeowners and businesses to become members as we seek to bring a sense of community to the hamlet.
