Dr. Fred Hicks reviewed “The Emperors of Chocolate” by Joel Glenn Brenner and “Chocolate Wars” by Deborah Cadbury at the Newark Public Library book review luncheon.

Dressing the part as is his custom, Dr. Fred Hicks reviewed “The Emperors of Chocolate” by Joel Glenn Brenner and “Chocolate Wars” by Deborah Cadbury.

“Candy,” the word itself is magic, a sweet remembrance of childhood and book review patrons were treated to tidbits of chocolate history as well as samples of the real thing. Dr. Hicks described the secret world of Hershey and Mars and other manufacturers of sweets. Many of these firms are into their third, fourth and fifth generations of ownership, unheard of in today’s business world. They trace their roots back to a single founder.

The next Friends of the Newark Public Library book review luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 14, 2011. Rev. Tim Johnson will be the reviewer.
