Hannan, Rita P.
Newark -- Rita P. Hannan, 86, passed away on February 18, 2012, at the DeMay Living Center after a long illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Michael’s Church, South Main St., Newark, with Father Dalimpuo officiating. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

Born in Rochester on September 20, 1925, Mrs. Hannan was the youngest child of the late William and Mary McGrath Powers. She was a graduate of Nazareth Academy and received her nurse’s training at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She lived in Rochester until 1956 when the family moved to Newark, where she continued to reside.
Mrs. Hannan was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church and active with St. Michael’s School Mother’s Club. As a young woman, she was employed by St. Mary’s Hospital and Newark Wayne Community Hospital, working in the nurseries. In later years, prior to her retirement, she was an office nurse in her son’s medical practice.
For most of her life, though, Mrs. Hanna was a homemaker-dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. In the face of tragedy, triumph, heartache, or joy, she served as an anchor of strength, courage and grace for her family.
Mrs. Hanna is survived by five children, her daughter Eileen Ersteniuk of Macedon, sons Raymond W. (Lois) of Clifton Springs, Dr. David (Pamela) of Pultneyville, Kenneth (Pamela) of Clifton Park, and Thomas (Renee) of Minneapolis, MN.; 17 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hanna was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Raymond G.; her two brothers Robert and Leo Powers, who lose their lives in World War II; her sister Blanche Laurent, her first-born child Roberta Lee, who died at one year of age; and an infant daughter Mary, who died at birth.

Soggs, Betty Jane
Williamson/Newark -- Betty Jane Soggs, 86, passed away on February 15, 2012, at Newark Wayne Community Hospital.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Paul L. Murphy and Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller St., Newark. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at the funeral home with Dan Benedict officiating. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.
Mrs. Soggs was born on February 22, 1925, in Sodus, the daughter of Guardy and Onitte O’Dell Wright. She had been a bartender at the Gandy Dancer in Newark. She was a member of the August Mauer Post 285 American Legion Auxiliary, and the Arcadia Memorial Post 2883 VFW Auxiliary.
Mrs. Soggs is survived by her children Beverly (Delbert) Webber of Wolcott, Cheryl (Randy) Gratton of North Bangor, N.Y., Sandra (Gary) Winch of South Bristol, Willard (Martha) Soggs of Macedon, and two sisters, Bessie Clevenger of Palmyra and Eleanor Blankenburg of Williamson.

Verkey, Gerald W.
Lyons/Newark -- Gerald W. Verkey, 75, passed away on February 19, 2012, at his home.
A celebration of his life will be held from 3 p.m. - till on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Palmyra Moose Club 1420, 3808 Rt. 31 in Palmyra.
Mr. Verkey was born on September 22, 1936 in Sodus, the son of John and Winifred Gen Verkey. He graduated from Wayne Central School in 1955. He served in the US Navy for six years aboard ships in the Atlantic and in the Mideast. He worked as a mechanic for 33 years for American Can Company in Fairport.
Mr. Verkey is survived by his significant other of 40 years, Alice Buck, three sons, Michael (Shari) of Tunnel Hill, IL., Scott of Macedon, and Kenneth (Kristin) of Newark; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ragland of Webster and Joan (Paul) Castiglione of Newark; three brothers, Jan (Ethel) of Leesburg, FL., Ronnie (Gabe) of Clyde, and Fay (Melissa) of East Palmyra; several nieces and nephews.

Turner, Norma N.
NEWARK -- Norma N. Turner, 87, of West Sherman Ave. passed away on February 16, 2012, at Clifton Springs Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 3 p.m. at Schulz-Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Ct., Newark. No prior calling hours. Burial will be in Macedon Village Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Turner was predeceased by her husband Daniel Turner in 1990.
Mrs. Turner was born in Macedon on April 16, 1924, daughter of Carl and Eleanor Hipp Koester. She worked at Garlock Co. in her earlier years and retired from Rochester Psychiatric Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Frank) Zappia of Newark, and Joyce (Franklin) Fogel of Nazareth, PA.; three sons, Robert (Diane) Van Waes of Shortsville, Richard (Carol) Van Waes of Newark, and David Van Waes; three step-sons, Walter, Robert and Daniel Turner; three sisters, Olive Zacharek of Syracuse, Mrytle Gates of Newark, and Ruth Wells of Fontana, CA.; grandchildren Joseph and Andrew Zappia, Ellen Patten, Debra Stauffer, Karen Haberle, Donna Kopach, Lislie Robinson, Leora Williams, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren.

Fitzgerald, Louise A.
Clyde/Newark/Victor -- Louise “Lucy” Fitzgerald, 59, passed away on February 14, 2012, at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Paul L. Murphy and Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller St., Newark, where the funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Pastor Ray Thompson. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Clyde.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was born on July 12, 1952, in Lyons, the daughter of the late Pasquale and Antionetta Youria DiLeo. A 1970 graduate of Clyde High School, she later went on to earn her associate’s degree in business management from Empire State College.
She worked at IEC as the Director of Human Resources for 22 years. She then moved to Florida where she worked in a family business. Returning to New York, Mrs. Fitzgerald had been living in Victor. For the past three years she was employed as the Human Resources Manager at Maco Bag Corporation in Newark. She was a member of the Calvary Chapel Church in Webster.
Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by her husband Robert R. Sr.; son Robert Jr. (Jodi) of Canandaigua; a daughter Julie (Jeffrey) Pistritto of Farmington; five grandchildren Alexandria, Grace and Sophia Fitzgerald, Jurianna and Jayla Pistritto; a brother Patsy DiLeo of Rochester; and sister Gina Stell of Clyde. She was predeceased by a sister Josephine DiLeo.
