Born in Newark to Eva and George Prutzman, she was predeceased by sisters, Miriam Trowbridge, Theresa Brown, Jane Pulver; and brothers, John and Gus.
Bettie married John “Jack” Shawcross in 1949, starting their family in Newark before moving to Camillus in 1962. They were members of Fairmount Community Church; Bettie served as a trustee and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed Women’s Fellowship, and especially the Monday night church poker ladies who remained dear friends to the end. While raising their family Bettie worked part-time in retail sales, and as a supervisor for the Senior Center at the New York State Fair in the 1980s. Never one to pass up a bargain, Bettie and Jack operated Treasures & Trinkets in their later years, an antiques and collectibles business which typically resulted in more acquisitions than sales. She and her husband Jack were married for 60 years before he passed away in 2009.
She is survived by daughters, Joan (Paul) Brooks of Cazenovia, and Jane Shawcross of Solvay; son, John “Jeff” (Debi) Shawcross of Richmond, Va.; five very special granddaughters who were her greatest joy, Kendra and Kassia Korkus, Jordan Brooks, Emma and Jane Shawcross. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Mary Prutzman; and many nieces and nephews.
Bettie’s family would like to thank the staff at McHarrie Pointe and Syracuse Home, Crouse Hospital, VNA, Home Aides, Crouse Community Center, Villas at Summerfield, Amy, Elizabeth, Roxanne, Jami, Marsha, and many other aides. They helped keep her going, and her spunk kept them on their toes as well.
Calling hours were 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 24 at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 10 Genesee (Main) St., Camillus.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., July 9 at Fairmount Community Church, United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.
