The Lions come back against No. 2 Oakfield-Alabama to end several years of frustration by finally winning the Secton 5 Class CC baseball title on Wednesday night versus the Hornets at Colburn Park in Newark.
After gaining the Section 5 Cass CC baseball championship game for the fourth time in the last five years, Lyons finally came through with its first title on Wednesday night at Colburn Park.
After the first inning, it appear the frustration might continue as the No. 1 seeded Lions trailed No. 2 Oakfield-Alabama, 4-0.
However, senior pitcher Derick Fera allowed just one more run as he finished with 11 strikeouts in hurling the Lions to their first championship. It marked the seniors third straight appearance in the title game.
The Hornets stung the Lions for four runs in the top of the first on two hits, a hit batsman, and three Lions errors.
Fera only allowed one hit the rest of the way as he struck out 11 as he had to overcome five Lyons errors in the contest as all of the Hornets runs were unearned.
Lyons got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a one-out single by Dustyn Wilkes. He eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Corey Borrelli started the rally with a double to left-center. Two hit batsmen and two bases-loaded walks forced in two runs. Alex Mussolino scored on a wild pitch to make the count 5-4, Oakfield.
Wilkes was intentionally walked to reload the bases, which brought Damien Scott to the plate. He ripped a single past third to plate Heyden Lester with the tying run.
Fera was on second, and as he rounded third, he was interferred with by the Hornet third baseman, and was awarded home plate by the umpire to put Lyons in front, 6-5.
Fera struck out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the win, and the Section 5 block.
