  • A six-run sixth inning put Fairport ahead to stay as they defeated Penfield 9-7 in a Monroe County East Division I game on Wednesday at Penfield.
The Red Raiders entered the inning trailing 3-2, but the rally started when Karen Jablonski doubled and Courtney Leverett singled. Fairport tied the game two batters later when Jablonski scored on an error.
Loryn Bucci gave the Red Raiders a 5-3 lead when she hit a two RBI double. Jill Gueli then added a two-RBI triple to give Fairport their biggest lead of the game at 7-3. Gueli scored the Red Raiders sixth run of the inning on a double steal.
As Fairport came out to warm up for the bottom of the sixth inning, thunder in the area caused the game to be delayed for 30 minutes. The delay sparked the Patriots who scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kasey Kellher led off the inning with a single for Penfield, and she was joined on the bases by Abby Dennett who was hit by a pitch. Chloe Handelman delivered an RBI double to put the Patriots down 8-4.
Dennett then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to three. Handelman brought Penfield within 8-6 after scoring on a fielder’s choice by Alicia Flanagan.
Leverett started a Fairport rally with a leadoff single in the top of the seventh. Three batters later Bucci brought her home with an RBI double to give the Red Raiders a 9-6 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
The Patriots quickly responded as an RBI double by Leah Crockett cut the lead to 9-7. Gueli came on in relief of Fairport starter Mackenzie Cleary and retired all three batters she faced to preserve the victory.
Jaime Hoskins gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, scoring on an error. RBIs by Lindsay Browning and Flanagan gave Penfield a 2-1 lead heading into the third inning.
Cleary tied the game at two in the ensuing inning with a RBI single. The game was tied until the bottom of the fifth inning when Nicole Schefer hit a solo home run to put the Patriots ahead 3-2.
Fairport is back in action against Webster Thomas at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Webster Town Hall Fields. Penfield hosts Webster Schroeder at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
