  • Chase away the winter blues with an upbeat evening of jazz Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. at Newark High School with Walt Weiskopf, tenor saxophonist with Steely Dan.
Saxophonist, composer and author, Weiskopf began his New York career performing with the Buddy Rich Big Band in 1981 at the age of 21.
Since then, he’s made an impressive mark as both a leader and sideman with 12 critically-acclaimed CDs and countless sideman credits, including performing and recording with Steely Dan, Frank Sinatra, Donald Fagen and Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy.
A dynamic player with enormous technical prowess, Weiskopf is equally well regarded as a composer and his CDs contain predominantly original work. His five books on advanced topics in improvisation are among the most respected in the field.
A visiting, part-time associate professor part-time at the Eastman School of Music from 2001 to 2008, he currently teaches part-time at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Besides performing a couple of solo numbers at Winter Jazz, White will perform with both the Jazz Ensemble, directed by NHS instrumental music teacher and district music supervisor Dave Schwind, and with Vocal Jazz, directed by NHS vocal music teacher Jean Bendix.
He will also work with NHS music students Jan. 3 through 5.
Tickets for the concert are $8 and are only available at the door. Senior citizens who have a Golden Pass can attend for free.
