  • Letter: Gas drilling, tourism don’t mix

  • I just don’t get it.

Gov. Cuomo recently held a big Tourism Summit. He apparently is designating large sums of money to promote tourism in upstate New York. Commendable as that may be, why is this same governor refusing to take a stand against horizontal hydrofracking for gas in the very area where he promotes tourism?

In my opinion, this is counterproductive and hypocritical.
Who in the world would be interested in visiting a region of polluted, contaminated lakes surrounded by gas-drilling pads spewing noxious fumes? Who wants to compete for road space with trucks hauling chemicals and toxic waste? One of the most beautiful rural landscapes in the country could become an industrial wasteland if horizontal hydrofracking for gas is permitted here.
If the governor truly wants to promote tourism here, he should take this into consideration.
