  • It's been three weeks since election day and Dan Maffei has conceded the race for the 25th Congressional District to Ann Marie Buerkle, a Republican newcomer.
Buerkle will be the new representative for the district, which covers all of Onondaga and Wayne Counties, parts of Cayuga County and Webster, parts of Irondequoit and Penfield in Monroe County.

"I am deeply and forever grateful for the opportunity to serve you during the past two years," Maffei wrote in a statement this afternoon. "I make no apologies, except to my friends, supporters, and staff for the fact the final outcome was not what we wanted.  I congratulate Congresswoman-elect Buerkle and her supporters and family.  I wish her luck in the new Republican majority."

Maffei won the open seat in 2008, swiftly defeating Dale Sweetland.
Buerkle and Maffei have been watching the votes, one by one, pile in from absentee and recounts in the four counties in the last three weeks. Buerkle's lead was thinnest by 303 votes last week.

"I made it to Congress — my dream — because of all the great Upstate New Yorkers who, like me, care so deeply about our future," Maffei wrote. "And while the dream was short-lived, my gratitude is eternal."
