I first bumped into Nina Davenport's First Comes Love at last year's Toronto International Film Festival; later, as a member of the programming team for the 2013 High Falls Film Fest, I lobbied for it to come to Rochester. (That it made it into HF3 is due far more to the perceptiveness and taste of head programmer Kate Bernola than anything I did.)

If you saw the doc at High Falls, hopefully you were as transfixed by the film as I was. It's an autobiographical account of the filmmaker's quest to have a baby at age 41, without a husband/boyfriend or any of the traditional safety nets. On its face the tale is pretty mundane, but that's its beauty, I think: The film personalizes a "generic" occurrence with fearlessness and stark honesty.

First Comes Love didn't make it to theaters -- a depressing number of great films don't, these days -- but you can catch it on HBO tonight at 9pm eastern. I highly recommend that you do.
