  • After working through the weekend counting absentee ballots, unofficial totals in Wayne County show Republican Ann Marie Buerkle has won the race for the 25th Congressional District over incumbent Democrat Dan Maffei.
After a state Supreme Court justice ordered the county to finish counting their ballots, Board of Election officials spent part of the weekend getting the job done.
“Judge Brian F. DeJoseph, state of New York Supreme Court in Syracuse,  ordered us to finish the recanvassing of votes,” said Jack Bailey, commissioner of the Wayne County Board of Elections.
Board of Elections officials also said they would check all vote counts to make sure they are accurate.
There will also be objected absentee votes from the district that will have to go to the judge.
As of Monday, the unofficial tally from the Wayne County Board of Elections shows Republican Buerkle receiving 790 absentee votes to Maffei’s 521. According to the Board of Elections’ website, the total unofficial count of all votes put Maffei at 9,774 votes and Buerkle topping out at 16,320.
Maffei had not announced his concession in the race as of Monday morning.
