Newark Volunteer Firefighters were called to a garage fire in the village last Thursday, Oct. 18 shortly after lunchtime.

When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered the heavy smoke billowing out of the garage on Church Street was coming from a Chevrolet Corvette parked inside, Department Public Information Officer Dick Colacino said. The owner told firefighters he was working on the car when the fire started. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and moved the vehicle outside the garage.

According to investigators, the probable cause the use of a torch on the vehicle engine compartment which ignited the electrical wiring materials.

The Corvette sustained moderate damage to the engine compartment, but there was no damage to the garage and no one was injured in the fire.
