  • A funeral director has been honored with one of the most distinguished awards that can be attained in the industry.
Paul L. Murphy, owner of Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home in Newark, was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rochester-Genesee Valley Funeral Directors Association at its annual meeting on May 20. The award is given annually to a person for their contributions and dedication to funeral service during his or her life.
Murphy said he was honored by the award and was pleased to be able to share the distinction with his family at the meeting.
Murphy has been a licensed funeral director for over 51 years. In 1968, he purchased a funeral home in Newark from the Parker family, he said.
He was working in the funeral profession in Attica when he heard through the grapevine the business in Newark was up for sale. It wasn’t long after that he moved to Newark.
“I knew I was going to move somewhere someday,” he said, noting he had no regrets. “I’m very glad. It’s a wonderful town, village, the whole area really — it’s beautiful.”
The business was established by Harry Parker 100 years ago in 1913, and it is where Murphy has stayed for the last 45 years. In 2001, Murphy’s two sons, John and David, joined the business, and its name changed to what it is today.
Dedicated to his profession, Murphy said it is his goal to show great compassion and caring for those in need of his services.
Over the years, Murphy has been active in funeral service industry groups, serving as president of the Wayne County Funeral Directors Association for 12 years, vice president of the Rochester-Genesee Valley Funeral Directors Association and treasurer of the Ontario-Wayne-Yates Funeral Directors Association for the past 12 years. He has also been a long-time member of both the New York State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
In his free time, Murphy volunteers with many charitable and community organizations.
