  • When the Rochester Press-Radio Club hosts its 64th Annual Day of Champions, two Webster Thomas High School student athletes will be among those honored.

Kara Houppert will receive the Harvey E. Anderson Scholarship, and Spenser Thomas, also a senior, will receive the Rich Funke Jr. Scholarship.

Both of these awards are presented to student athletes who excel in the classroom and embody qualities of good citizenship, self-motivation, achievement, and concern for others.

Houppert is a three-sport captain at Webster Thomas High School who will be studying Early Childhood/Special Education at Slippery Rock University this fall thanks to a basketball scholarship. She is an All-Monroe County selection in soccer (midfielder), basketball (point-guard), and lacrosse (middie). At Webster Thomas, she is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers with Link Crew and the Webster Community Chest. She also raises funds for Webster area charities by collecting returnable bottles and cans through Kara’s Kans, an organization she founded.

Thomas is a three-sport athlete who balances his life with academics, family, friends and community service. He’s a multiple All-Monroe County selection in volleyball (outside hitter), basketball (power forward), and baseball (shortstop). He’s a member of the National Honor Society and headed to Alfred University this fall to study mechanical engineering and play basketball. He volunteers for church suppers, age-group basketball games, and as a youth coach for Webster Community Baseball.

The Rochester Press-Radio Club’s 64th Annual Day of Champions will take place Tuesday, June 18 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center beginning at 6:00 PM. Single tickets cost $130 and include sit-down dinner, silent auction, live auction, giveaways, and guest speaker presentation by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. All proceeds benefit Rochester children’s charities. For ticket information, call 340-1460.
