We don’t often think of "ceilings" in the landscape. I discovered this inspiring space on a recent visit to Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown (DC). Positioned above a shallow pool, a simple structure of aluminum poles and cable supports a fabric of crumpled chicken wire. Many crystal pendants are attached like droplets to the wire, creating a glittering, cloud-like chandelier. This abstract composition symbolizes a natural process, although it’s suspended; this transmits a sense of timelessness, a snapshot of one moment in a continuous cycle. It is the enchantment of a beautiful garden.
