The Newark High School Wind Ensemble and Concert Band received gold ratings April 26 & 27 after being evaluated at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Organization Festival held at Spencerport High School.

Two certified adjudicators listened and evaluated the groups that are directed by District Music Supervisor and NHS instrumental teacher Dave Schwind.

The Wind Ensemble performed level VI music and earned a rating of Gold with Distinction, the highest possible rating. The Concert Band performed level IV music and earned a Gold rating.
Level VI music is described in the NYSSMA manual as “very difficult and for musically mature groups of exceptional competence.”

Schwind said comments from the judges about the Wind Ensemble performance included these remarks:

• “This was well done.”

• “This was an excellent performance today.”

• “A fine example of what successful teaching & learning can accomplish when dedicated students and teachers work together toward a common goal.”

• “ This is an outstanding HS Wind Ensemble that is making great music.”

Level IV music is described in the NYSSMA manual as “moderately difficult: recommended for average high school groups.”

Schwind said comments from the judges about the Concert Band performance included:

• “I liked the contrast in dynamics. “

• “This was presented well. “

• “It is always a pleasure to be able to hear and see young student musicians enjoying themselves making music.”

The NYSSMA Gold Rating is awarded to groups that have demonstrated an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in all three selections.

The NYSSMA Gold With Distinction rating is awarded to groups that qualify for a Gold Rating, as stated above, while having achieved a standard of performance deemed exceptional in all three selections.

“I’m extremely proud of our hardworking musicians and their accomplishments,” Schwind said.
The Senior Recognition Concert will be held June 4 at 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
