Unshackle Upstate called upon its “army” of followers to send messages to their state legislators demanding support for a property tax cap with accompanying mandate relief for local governments.

Unshackle Upstate, a pro-business, pro-taxpayer coalition of more than 80 organizations representing 70,000 employers and 1.5 million employees, called for the state Legislature to support Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal of a property tax cap of two percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.

Coalition leaders said property tax cap and mandate relief are the best and only ways to address the core drivers of New York’s exorbitant property taxes.

Unshackle has proposed a number of measures for reducing state spending, including implementing the recommendations made by the Souza and Undine commissions such as appropriate government consolidation and sharing of services, as well as changes to the Triborough Amendment and Taylor Law which govern employee contract negotiations.
