  • Hannah Rothpearl will have the distinction April 3-7 of being Newark High School Vocal Music teacher Jean Bendix’s first vocal student at NHS to participate in a National Association for Music Education All Eastern Conference.
Rothpearl, a senior, was eligible to be nominated to participate in the distinctive biennial conference because she received a perfect 100 score on her Level 6 solo in the New York State School Music Association Solo Festival last spring. That qualified her to participate in Conference All State in Rochester in December.
Bendix said anyone who qualifies to go to Conference All State is eligible to apply to participate in the NAfME AllEastern Conference. But they must also be accepted.
She nominated Rothpearl in September and learned in November her student had been selected to participate. This year NAfME’s All Eastern Conference will be held in Hartford, Connecticut.
“Hannah is an excellent musician and this is a real jewel in her crown,’’ Bendix said, explaining that just this school year Rothpearl participated in not only Conference All State in Rochester, but sang with six other NHS vocal students in December in the Rochester Philharmonic Holiday Pops Concert.
“She’s been a very busy girl,’’ Bendix said, adding Rothpearl also has a leading role of Janet van de Graaff in the NHS Spring Musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
“Hannah is very talented in many areas,’’ Bendix continued. “She loves the arts and poetry. She’s a true Bohemian in the best sense of the word.’’
Rothpearl who had the leading role of Lilli Vanessi in the 2012 NHS Spring musical “Kiss Me Kate” won a runner-up Elenbe award last May for best actress.
She is a member of St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy senior choir in Geneva and two year’s ago toured England with the choir.
Rothpearl said she’s “pretty excited” to be the first one of Bendix’s students at NHS to have been selected to participate in the NAfME All Eastern Conference. She also said the day in November when she was home sick and Bendix called her to tell her she’d been selected, she didn’t believe her.
