Tracy Elliott is a 48-year-old Newark resident who needs support from family, friends and the entire community. Tracy was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) in 2000 and requires a double lung transplant, but needs $25,000 just to begin the process. The Spirit Alive Bible Study Group at St. Michael's Church in Newark is planning a Spaghetti Dinner on Feb. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Church Hall to help contribute towards this goal.
Tracy is presently working with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and has been told that there will be a six month to one year wait for the transplant. She has to make the trip to Ohio once every four months to be seen by the doctors at the clinic. She is expecting a call from them sometime in April and will, once again, make arrangements to travel there. She continues to work at Mechmar Industries in Macedon even though she is on oxygen as she and her husband, Patrick, need money to pay the household expenses, medical bills and travelling costs. Tracy intends to work as long as she can, but realizes that the time is coming closer when she will no longer have the strength to do the job.
Bobbi Elliott, Tracy's mother-in-law, says that she has been named chairperson for her daughter-in-law's fundraising by the NFT, National Transplant Foundation, and will assist in any way that she can as she knows that the situation is at a critical point.
NFT claims that, "The average double lung transplant costs approximately $800,000 and that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Tracy still faces significant medical expenses related to the transplant. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post transplant medications are very pricey, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself."
The NFT has been assisting transplant patients with advocacy and fundraising support for 29 years and will work with Bobbi Elliott to help her acquire the needed funds. Bobbi is a member of the Spirit Alive Bible Study Group at St. Michael's Church in Newark and once members of the congregation heard about the seriousness of the situation, they began planning ways to assist.
A Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner complete with salad, garlic bread, beverages and homemade desserts will be held on Feb. 24, in St. Michael's Church Hall located at 401 South Main St., Newark. Basket Raffles and a Bake Sale will also be held to benefit Tracy. Tickets will be $8 per person, $7 for seniors, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and under 5 free, or $25 per family. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the Church Office at 331-6753 or will be available at the door. Take outs will be $8.
