There was an interesting discovery made this weekend on the beach near the old Sodus Bay lighthouse.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said a man found an expended aerial flare washed up on shore. He did the right thing and called the U.S. Army Explosive Disposal Unit at Fort Drum.

Police say the device is still extremely dangerous and it can self ignite if handled the wrong way.

Police warn if you find anything like this, call 911 immediately and don’t touch it.

The flare was described as a metal cylinder about 18 to 20 inches long, three to four inches in diameter with a big warning label on it.
