Marion Community Schools juniors and global citizens, Hallie Dezio and Katie White, recently assisted a Rochester-based charitable organization by translating postoperative instructions from English to Spanish.

The Help Us Give Smiles Foundation Inc. corrects congenital facial deformities of children lacking medical care in underdeveloped countries. HUGS was founded in 2003 by Dr. Vito Quatela, a Rochester-based facial plastic surgeon. The foundation has provided more than 900 surgical procedures during 18 mission trips.

The teams consist of world-class doctors, nurses and volunteers, who will provide life-changing procedures in Vietnam in March, Ecuador in April and Guatemala in Sept.

Dezio and White translated critical post-operative instructions for Spanish-speaking families, whose children had undergone surgery related to cleft palates or cleft lips.

Dezio and White will participate in charitable programs in the Dominican Republic during the summer. Dezio recently was accepted into the Global Leadership Adventures and will travel to the Dominican Republic, with other students from around the world, to work in a clinic with a team of medical professionals. White will travel with Filter of Hope to distribute water filters and provide hygiene training and soap for impoverished families in the Dominican Republic.

Filter of Hope developed a state-of-the-art water filter, which uses the same technology found in kidney dialysis machines.

Dezio and White are considering a future in the medical field.
