The bridge carrying Walworth Road over the Erie Canal in Macedon recently closed to traffic until further notice.

A recent bridge inspection and engineering analysis identified a need for immediate response. No official detour is posted, however, Maple Avenue over the Erie Canal in Palmyra is approximately 1 1/2 miles to the east.

The Walworth Road bridge is a single lane truss bridge built in 1911. It connects state Route 31 to the south and Quaker Road to the north. About 2,538 vehicles use this canal crossing each day.

A plan to address its condition is being developed.

Town code officer Scott Allen said he was told the bridge could be closed for approximately 8 weeks.

Town Supervisor Sandy Pagano declined to comment.
