Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County will offer new tutor training from 3 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Sept. 12 and ending Sept. 31 at the Wayne County Public Safety Building, 7376 state Route 31, Lyons.
The training will include orientation, sessions on teaching basic literacy and English as a second language skills and will end with a session on successful tutoring. Tutors will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a student or in small groups assisting adults with topics such as basic literacy, high school equivalency diplomas, computer skills, English as a second language or mathematics.
Alternative times and online options are available. Tutors must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent and must be willing to complete 18 hours of training to become certified.
Once certified, a tutor should be willing to commit to working with an adult student about two hours a week and keep basic written records. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is required, and no teaching background is needed.
