The North Rose Fire Company, U.S. Coast Guard and Wayne County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol responded to a boat fire near Eagle Island on Sodus Bay on Aug. 21.

Daniel Kuntz, 54, of Rochester, reported that he was traveling across Sodus Bay when his motor quit. He found his motor compartment engulfed in flames after checking the problem. Kuntz and two children ages 6 and 7 escaped the flames by jumping into the water. A passing boater stopped and picked them up, and no one was injured.

The fire was extinguished, but not before the fiberglass vessel burned to the water line. Marine Patrol attempted to remove the remainder of the hull from the bay, where it had become a navigation hazard. The remainder of the vessel sank in 25 feet of water while in transit to the Sodus Point substation.

The Sheriff’s dive team was able to extract it from the water. No criminal activity is suspected.
