Gananda Dollars for Scholars is celebrating 25 years of awarding scholarships to students with a strong work ethic who contribute to their community.

The program has awarded over $500,000 to over 800 students since 1991. Recipient Madeline Donegan showed her appreciation for her scholarship awards through an illustration in her thank you note. Gananda Dollars for Scholars members liked her ideas, so they asked her to create another illustration based on her idea that will be used on social media and promotional materials.

Donegan’s creation is an illustration of a cake with the layers labeled with volunteering, community service, work service, academics and extracurricular activities. The icing on the cake says scholarships.

“We love the design and Madeline’s idea that scholarships are the icing on the cake,” said Tracy Hoteling, Gananda Dollars for Scholars president. “She represents the students at Gananda who work hard at all aspects of their lives and are awarded scholarships based on one of their many talents and community service.”

The community can celebrate the anniversary at Gananda Dollars for Scholars Night on Sept. 20 at Long Acre Farm, 1342 Eddy Road, Macedon. The event will feature the Amazing Maize Maze, cider and doughnuts. Long Acre Farm sponsors a scholarship every year in memory of Harlan Lawrence, the second generation of the Lawrence family that owned the farm. Tickets cost $10.

Businesses and community members can sponsor a scholarship for 2017. In 2016, 24 Gananda students from the class of 2016 and 14 from the class of 2015 were awarded over $36,000 in scholarships.
