Wayne County Clerk Michael Jankowski and Sheriff Barry Virts recently partnered to provide a medication drop box at the Department of Motor Vehicles, 9 Pearl St., Lyons.
The medication drop box is available to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Mondays-Fridays.
Accepted items include any prescription medication, prescription ointments, pet medications, prescription patches, over-the-counter medications and vitamins. Unaccepted materials include needles, inhalers, aerosol cans, thermometers, lotions, liquids and hydrogen peroxide.
The medication drop box will be emptied weekly by Wayne County Sheriff’s Office evidence technicians, who will deposit the surrendered medications in the WCSO Evidence Room to later be destroyed at an incinerator plant per sheriff’s office policy.
This partnership provides a safe disposal service to reduce the abuse of prescription medication and prevent polluting county landfills and water supplies. Those who have prescription drugs or medications that are no longer needed or used are encouraged to use this disposal service at the DMV to rid homes of any unneeded medications.
