Sgt. Joseph Ayotte, of Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, recently received the Life Saving Award from Sgt. Gagliano, of Rochester Police Department, for his actions on Nov. 26, 2013.
Gagliano, who lives in Wayne County, was driving home after his shift at RPD when he stopped at Tops Friendly Markets in Ontario to pick up items for an upcoming event. He experienced a severe headache while at the store that caused him to leave. While traveling home, Gagliano had a motor vehicle incident and drove off the roadway.
Ayotte responded to the incident, assessed the scene and realized there was a medical emergency.
Gagliano was transported to a Rochester hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm. He has no recollection of the driving mishap, the transport to the hospital, his surgery or the next 21 days until he became conscious.
He recently retired from RPD, and originally wanted to present the award to Ayotte at his retirement. Ayotte was unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict, so Gagliano presented the award a few weeks later at WCSO.
