Wayne County Gem and Mineral Club will host its 25th annual GemFest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 2 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 3 at Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, 250 W. Bloomfield Road.
Admission is $3 for adults, free for ages 11 and younger as well as Scouts in uniform. The family event features minerals, fossils, gemstones, beads and jewelry.
As a community-oriented club, one of WCGMC’s primary objectives is science education, especially geology, minerals, fossils and the world.
At GemFest, club members provide hands-on experiences for adults and youth with crafts like soapstone carving and wire wrapping, rock painting with a local artist, a scavenger hunt through the full venue, an operating sluice, a 6-foot dinosaur, a show on fluorescent minerals, educational exhibits, geodes to cut and giveaways. Mineral, fossil and jewelry vendors are encouraged to interact with kids who inquire about things at their booths.
WCGMC members collect minerals and fossils and get together to share their common interest. The group meets monthly in Newark, has a club workshop in Wolcott and organizes annual collecting trips. Its monthly newsletter features club activities, and links members with others in New York and surrounding states who enjoy the hobby.
