A primary for voters enrolled in the Democratic Party takes place Tuesday in several local congressional districts. In our area, the 23rd, challenging U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning and the 24th, challenging U.S. Rep. John Katko, R-Syracuse are on the ballot.

In the 23rd Congressional District, five candidates are on the ballot. The 23rd covers all or parts of 11 counties including all of Steuben and Yates along with the eastern part of Ontario County. In Ontario County, the district covers the towns of Manchester, Hopewell, Phelps, Seneca, Gorham, Geneva town and city, along with the village of Naples and the town of Naples east of Route 21.
The 23rd candidates are: Linda Andrei, of Tompkins County; Max Della Pia, of Tioga County; Ian Golden, of Tompkins County; Tracy Mitrano, of Yates County; and Eddie Sundquist, of Chautauqua County. Mitrano will also appear on the Women’s Equality line with an option for those enrolled in that party to vote for Mitrano or write in a candidate.
The primary winner will be on the November ballot to challenge U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning.
Democrats in the 24th Congressional District, which includes Wayne County, will pick a challenger for U.S. Rep. John Katko, R-Syracuse. Dana Balter and Juanita Perez Williams are on the ballot.
In Monroe County, the race affecting the most people is for the 25th. Candidates running for former Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s seat include Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle, Brighton Town Council member Robin Wilt, former TV journalist Rachel Barnhart, and Rochester City Council Vice President Adam McFadden. The winner will face Republican Dr. Jim Maxwell in the general election.
Polls will be open Tuesday from noon until 9 p.m.
