Newark Elks Lodge No. 1249 recently secured a Gratitude Grant from Elks National Foundation in the amount of $500 for local Girl Scouts.
“Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place,” said Rachel Stoneham, Unit 417 service manager and Troop 41053 leader. “Most people know us for our cookies, but we also earn badges, go camping and participate in many community service projects every year. Sometimes, we help clean up the community and plant flowers. This year, we ran a book drive for the hospital, donated birthday bags to our food pantry and donated blankets and toys to the Humane Society of Wayne County.
“This donation is going toward the reservation costs, food and badges for Newark Girl Scout’s Encampment Weekend. This will help us lower the cost for girls to attend, as well as allow us to provide food for the first time.”
