The chase started with an alleged theft at Marketplace Mall and ended with a crash near Batavia

BATAVIA — A man and a woman are in custody Friday after shots were fired during a police chase on the Thruway near the Batavia exit.

State police said the suspects were pursued by Monroe County sheriff's deputies after an alleged theft at the Sears in Marketplace Mall in Henrietta.

Multiple agencies assisted in the chase including New York State Police, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.

“That vehicle was located on 390 by Monroe County Sheriff's Office and a pursuit was initiated by that agency and the NYSP," said Major Ed Kennedy. "That pursuit went onto the Thruway, it continued until it went to the Batavia exit, where the suspect vehicle exited, spun around, lost control. It was then surrounded by multiple police vehicles."

Police say that is when the scene escalated.

"When they tried to stop the suspect vehicle, it drove towards law enforcement, threatening them, in an aggressive manner," Kennedy added.

That was when a trooper fired shots. However, no injuries were reported as the suspects drove off into a private driveway on Kelsey Road.

The suspects, then, crashed the car in a field and tried to run. Shortly after, both suspects were caught by police.

They are now being evaluated and treated for potential injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital.

According to State Police, Kelsey Road between Route 5 and Pratt Road was closed due to the ongoing investigation.
