Local cooks will compete for cash prizes and the title of Best Amateur Barbecuer on Sept. 15 at Smokin’ Up the Center, a fundraiser hosted by Sodus Center Fire Department, 5521 Main St., Sodus.
The gates open at noon. This annual event is organized by Sodus Center Volunteer Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary.
DJ Jim Fremouw and The Groove Kings Band will perform from 3 to 7 p.m. Sodus Center FD will prepare ribs, brisket, pulled pork, salt potatoes, baked beans and coleslaw. Children can enjoy a bounce house, face painting and games. There will be door prizes and drawings throughout the afternoon.

This year’s event features a chili and apple pie contests. Contestants are limited to one entry per person. Winners will receive cash prizes. Call (315) 483-6116 or (315) 483-6328 to receive an entry form.
Judging for the barbecue contest starts at 5 p.m., with prizes awarded at 7:30 p.m. The grand prize is $250 for Best Ribs and Best Brisket. Single category prizes are $50.
Call (315) 573-3232 to register for the barbecue contest. The $75 entry fee includes the cost of the meat, which will be provided the morning of the challenge by Joe’s Meat Market in Ontario. The contest is limited to 15 teams, and entries must be postmarked by Sept. 10. There will be a waiting list, should space open up. This challenge is open to amateurs only.
Tickets include food and entertainment. Takeouts are available. All tickets are sold at the door. Proceeds will help Sodus Center FD purchase needed equipment.
Pets are not allowed. Children ages 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
