The annual Wayne County Apple Tour is marking its 21st anniversary this fall.
Since 1997, visitors throughout western and central New York have explored Wayne County to pick fresh apples, see the fall colors and enjoy a day of family fun. The Apple Tour has grown through the years, and so has its offerings for adults with the addition of three wineries, three cideries and one distillery.
The New York State Tourism Industry Association presented its Tourism Excellence Cultural Heritage Award to the tour in 2017. The Wayne County Tourism Office received this award from NYSTIA at its annual meeting.
Wayne County Tourism partners with 13 local businesses to host the tour, which runs throughout October. Every stop earns visitors a stamp on their tour map, which can be mailed to the Tourism Office for a chance to win a gift basket if postmarked by Nov. 6.
Prizes go out in September through the Facebook page. Before the tour officially starts, visitors can keep up with tour details, look up apple facts and recipes, and participate in a weekly contest by liking the Apple Tasting Tour on Facebook. Four trivia winners will receive a $20 gift card to one of the businesses on the tour.
Three stops are celebrating a milestone birthday in 2018. Thorpe Vineyards, 8150 Chimney Heights Blvd., Wolcott, turns 30 this year. Long Acre Farms and JD Wine Cellars, 1342 Eddy Road, Macedon, celebrates 25 years. Young Sommer Winery, 4287 Jersey Road, Williamson, reaches its 10th anniversary this year.
Wayne County is the largest apple-producing county in the state. A tasting weekend on Oct. 5-8 will offer activities and extra celebrations along the trail over the Columbus Day holiday.
Additional stops on the tour are Apple Country Spirits and Rootstock Ciderworks, 3274 Eddy Road, Williamson; Apple Town Farm Market, 4734 state Route 104, Williamson; Burnaps Farm Market and Garden Cafe, 7277 Maple Ave., Sodus; Lagoner Farm Market and Embark Craft Ciderworks, 6895 Lake Ave., Williamson; Morgan’s Farm Market, 3821 Cory Corners Road, Marion; Mackquinle Farm, 5630 Norris Road, North Rose; Orbaker’s Fruit Farm, 3451 Lake Road, Williamson; The Apple Shed and Old Goat Cidery, 3391 Fairville-Maple Ridge Road, Newark; Wagers Country Apple, 7047 Main St., Red Creek; and Wayside Farms, 12624 Ridge Road, Wolcott.
