The day of violence in Monroe County ended with the man taking his own life, deputies say
One woman is dead and another is in critical condition following a murder in Penfield and attempted murder in Riga Wednesday morning.
Deputies responded to a welfare call at a home on Collingsworth Drive around 10:30 a.m. where they found a woman dead inside. Her identity had not yet been released Wednesday evening.
At 11:10 a.m., deputies responded to Leibeck Road in Riga as part of the investigation and found 75-year-old Florence Ford of Riga, who was unresponsive. Deputies believe she had been in that condition for a couple of hours. She was in critical condition at Strong Memorial Hospital Wednesday with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say that both victims appear to have been bludgeoned.
Throughout the investigation, deputies tracked down a person of interest identified as 52-year-old Arnold Ford Jr. near Erie, Pennsylvania.
State Police in Pennsylvania found Ford Jr. dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a vehicle.
Investigators believe the murder victim was Ford Jr.'s wife and that Florence Ford was his mother.
Neighbors of Florence Ford in Riga say they're not only shocked but that it's unsettling to know this happened right next to where they live.
Some neighbors were home Tuesday night through Wednesday, but none of them heard or saw anything unusual or suspicious. They described Ford as quiet but sweet, friendly and always waving.
One neighbor, in particular, met the son who investigators identified as Arnold Ford Jr. and never expected anything like this.
"I met him a couple times," said Larry Batz. "We'd seen him come and go, never heard arguing. Everything was quiet. I checked on my neighbor all the time and to have that happen right next door is hard to believe."
As the investigation continues, police encourage anyone with information to give them a call.
