Ontario County Humane Society seized 12 dogs — 5 adults and 7 three-month old puppies from a Canandaigua apartment.
Two people face animal cruelty charges after authorities discovered 12 dogs — 5 adults and 7 three-month old puppies — living inside their Canandaigua apartment.
The Ontario County Humane Society, Canandaigua police and Canandaigua code enforcement officers responded Friday afternoon to Lakeside Village Apartments at 275 Jefferson Ave. According to the Human Society, the apartment was where the code officer had previously issued a vacate order to the tenants earlier in the day that had not been obeyed.
Upon arriving the apartment was found to be unsanitary, with feces and urine that created a pungent ammonia smell that filled the apartment, according to the report. In addition, fleas/gnats and garbage were found throughout the apartment occupied by Howard T. Gilbert, 26, and Breanna N. Gilbert, 21.
Howard Gilbert claimed to have three dogs living in the apartment. Upon further investigation, 12 dogs were found inside the apartment.
Howard and Breanna Gilbert were both charged with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. Howard Gilbert was taken to the Ontario County Jail for pre-detention arraignment. Breanna Gilbert was issued an appearance ticket to be in the City of Canandaigua Court at a later date.
The Humane Society seized the dogs and had them examined by an area vet. The dogs and puppies, all hound mix, are being cared for at the Ontario County Humane Society’s Happy Tails Animal Shelter in Hopewell.
