Staff and students at Newark High School and Newark Middle School received a sweet treat on Valentine’s Day, and it wasn’t in the typical form of candy, cards or flowers.
They were surprised when 11 musicians showed up in their work areas or classrooms to sing “I Love You Truly” in barbershop quartet-style harmony.
These singers from NHS were Natalie Acquista, Cody Acquista, Isabella Bailey, Jaston Brooks, Ben Cepulo, Jack Comella, Carson Jordan, Ashton Keene, Anisha Stallworth, Medina VanDuyne and Kylar Vermeulen. Most will appear in “The Music Man” on March 1-3 at NHS.
NHS vocal music teacher Kate Flock said the students rehearsed the song twice before performing. The idea for the singing messages came from the NHS Choir Council.
Flock said they thought it would be a great way to raise money for various causes. This year raised $220 for the Laurel House Comfort Care Home in Newark. The group sold 44 tickets at $5 each.
