Residents of the Wayne County Nursing Home and Canandaigua VA Medical Center, as well as staff and volunteers at the Humane Society of Wayne County, recently received Valentine’s Day cards made by students at Lincoln and Perkins schools in Newark.
Assistant Principal Greg Herbst, adviser to two school student leadership teams that came up with this idea, helped facilitate the project and delivered the cards.
Approximately 220 students at Lincoln School made cards for Wayne County Nursing Home residents. Nearly 330 kids at Perkins School made cards for all three locations, with each class picking a location.
Herbst said the cards thanked veterans for their service, as well as Humane Society staff and volunteers for caring for animals. Cards for the nursing home residents were general Valentine’s Day wishes.
“Some of the classes used this as a writing assignment and students wrote notes to the recipients,” Herbst said.
He added that VA staff distributed cards to veterans in their rooms and nursing home staff put the cards on residents’ lunch trays.
