Vocal musicians in grades 3-12 recently sang their hearts out to a standing room-only audience in the Newark High School Auditorium for the Festival of Song.
More than 900 people attended the annual concert, with many standing outside in the hallway.
The concert showcased the combined Kelley School grades 3-5 choruses, directed by Libby Brozik; the Newark Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade choruses, directed by Lisa Clark; and the NHS Mixed Choir and NHS Chamber Choir, directed by Kate Flock.
The Festival of Song ended with the choirs singing “Lean on Me,” which brought a standing ovation from the audience.
“Great showstopper to end on: ‘Lean on Me’!” tweeted Superintendent Matt Cook. “Combined chorus sounded great … That was a ton of talent on stage and the whole community came out to cheer them on!”
Flock said she was pleased with the concert and the size of the audience.
“Many people commented they really enjoy seeing the musical progression from the youngest chorus members at Kelley School to our seniors,” she said. “I think that’s what gives the ‘wow’ effect to this concert.”
Kyle Bliek, the broadcast TV/social media coordinator for Newark Central School District, recorded the event so it could be streamed on the NHS YouTube channel and Facebook page.
