The town of Sodus Historical Society and Wayne Action for Racial Equality will host a dedication for the new Pomeroy Foundation marker honoring the Maxwell Settlement at 11 a.m. on May 4 at Steger Haus, 7171 N. Geneva Road, Sodus.
The marker will recognize the African-American families who settled in the area starting in the early 1800s. Much of this settlement was started by slaves brought to this area and freed by the Fitzhugh family from Maryland.
Many of these families and their descendants helped harbor the freedom-seekers on their way to board a boat to Canada. During the Civil War, over 15 area men joined regiments to fight.
To honor these families and this history, the ceremony will include a short program with speakers, music and a buffet lunch. Descendants from the original families are expected to attend.
Reservations are requested by April 15. Call (585) 967-8687 or email for information.
