Excellence award goes to president/CEO of largest, independently-owned telephone company in New York state

Paul Griswold, president and CEO of Ontario & Trumansburg Telephone Companies, was honored as the 16th recipient of the 2019 FTTXcellence Award. The award recognizes Griswold for significantly advancing the use of optical broadband access network technology.

The Ontario & Trumansburg Telephone Companies (OTTC) and its subsidiaries form the largest independently owned telephone company in New York state. OTTC provides phone and internet services to more than 12,000 residential and business customers in Phelps, Clifton Springs, Trumansburg, Interlaken, Ovid and Romulus. In a recent development, OTTC became the first independent telephone company in upstate New York to implement the new FlexNAP system from Corning Inc. — a leading innovator in materials science — into OTTC’s fiber-to-the-home build. FlexNAP allows for faster, more reliable fiber installation to homes and businesses.

“This innovation from Corning has transformed the way we install fiber optic cable,“ stated Griswold.

FlexNAP allows installers to “tap into” existing fiber cabling to easily connect homes and businesses in a process similar to plugging a lamp into an electrical outlet.

“This plug-and-play solution is more cost-effective and saves time compared to the traditional method of cutting into fiber optic cable and fusion splicing fibers at every connection point,” states OTTC. What’s more, the company states, “the technology allows residents to experience the convenience of their own high-speed internet connection separate from cable — so outside elements such as bad weather or too many users slowing down internet speeds is nonexistent.”

OTTC is using fiber FlexNap technology in Phelps and Clifton Springs. This summer, OTTC continues to expand its fiber-to-the-home build via FlexNap through Trumansburg, Ovid, Interlaken and Romulus. By fall, all of the Trumansburg area is slated to have fiber to the home.

A panel of judges selected Griswold for the award. The panel was comprised of representatives from the Fiber Broadband Association, Corning Inc., Lightwave and producers of the Fiber Connect Conference and Expo.

“I am humbled and honored to be nominated and judged by my peers to receive this prestigious award,” stated Griswold. “I share this honor with the leadership team and employees at OTTC, who work with me every day to expand broadband access network technology to more customers across upstate New York.”

Griswold received the award at the Fiber Connect Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the award, a $5,000 donation in his name was made to U.S. Ignite, a nonprofit organization that fosters the creation of next-generation Internet applications that provide transformative public benefit.

An industry peer who nominated Griswold stated in a letter: “At a time when many network operators are delaying network investments and extending the life of their copper infrastructure, Mr. Griswold’s company has recently overbuilt fiber-to-the-home to 11,000 residences in upstate New York with a plan to offer fiber-based services to another 100,000 homes by the end of this year.”
