The Beta Theta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society Int. announced that Mallory Williams, of Newark, was selected as the 2019 Mary Putnam Recruitment Grant recipient.
Williams will attend SUNY Fredonia and pursue a degree in music education. At Newark High School, Williams is active in National Honor Societ, chamber choir, mixed choir, concert band as student conductor, wind ensemble as band president and section leader, jazz band as section leader and junior varsity volleyball.
Outside of school, Williams is the principal trumpet in the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Symphony. In addition, she is a competitive equestrian as well as a volunteer with the Victim Resource Center.
The grant was established in 1981 to honor Mary Taylor Putnam, charter member of Beta Theta. Her career at Sodus Central Schools included teaching first grade, serving as a primary reading teacher, reading coordinator, primary principal and curriculum supervisor for K-12.
In additio, Putnam service in numerous DKG positions including Pi State president, member-at-large of the International Administrative Board of Society, International first vice president and northeast regional director. Putnam received the Pi State Achievement Award in 1974.
The grant totals $1,000 over a four-year period and is givien to a student pursuing a career in education. Recipients are selected by the Professional Affairs Committee upon review of each candidate’s application, letters of recommendation and transcript.
