The tradition of elevating women, the poor and the mentally ill will continue with the 11th annual I’mpower dinner that will be held Nov. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Burgundy Basin, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford.

I’mpower is a charity started by Fairport mom Laurie Campbell and her friends to reach out to people in the Rochester community and give them a boost.

“We’ve always focused on helping people get the services they need and making sure those who are struggling physically, mentally or emotionally feel supported,” said Campbell. “When I heard about St. Joseph’s Northside, I knew it was a perfect fit.”

St. Joseph’s Northside is a ministry run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. It was started by Sister Peg Brennan in 2005. Brennan died recently, but the desire to keep her ministry alive burns deep within the staff and volunteers who continue to operate near the Holy Apostles Church off Lyell Avenue.

“We have compassionate volunteers ready to help. I truly believe one of the most important things we can offer our neighbors is a consistent presence, “said Traci De Lario, director of St Joseph’s Northside. “This allows people to feel safe, be heard and feel trusted.”

At the dinner, De Lario will serve as the guest speaker and will share more about the mission to offer respite to folks dealing with trauma, untreated mental health issues and drug and alcohol addiction.

“Sometimes they come in and want to talk about what happened to them last night,” said De Lario. “Other times, they ask for help with rent or their RG&E bill. I often sit with them and connect them to agencies that will help them meet their obligations.”

St Joseph’s Northside also provides toiletries and transportation vouchers. Bus passes and small containers of soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, travel-size deodorant are at the top of the SJN Wish List. There is also a constant need for plastic ware, paper plates, bowls, coffee cups, and cleaning products — especially disinfectant wipes. Guests coming to the Impower dinner are asked to bring as many items as they can.

Tickets to the dinner are available for $50. Call Laurie Campbell at 585-820-8626. To donate items on the wish list, they can be brought to the dinner or dropped off at the Sisters of Saint Joseph facility at 150 French Road, Rochester NY 14618.
