The Newark Central School District, in conjunction with the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce, will host an evening of holiday music with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Newark High School.
“We are very proud and privileged to host the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for the 19th consecutive year,” said Cynthia Briggs, district music department leader and Kelley School instrumental music teacher. “These holiday concerts here in our community are a wonderful annual holiday tradition that so many of us look forward to.”
Paul Shewan, professor of instrumental music and conducting at Roberts Wesleyan College, will conduct the concert. He is a member of the RPO trumpet section and guest conducted on numerous occasions.
Shewan conducts the Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, and teaches trumpet, brass ensembles, brass methods and instrumental conducting at Roberts. In 2005, he formed the Eastman/Roberts Chamber Players, an ensemble of students from Roberts and Eastman School of Music.
The guest baritone soloist will be Jeffery McGhee, professor of voice at Roberts. He appeared with the RPO in “A Holiday Concert,” “Liberty for All: A Salute to Veterans,” “The Composer is Dead” and “America’s Musical Roots.”
McGhee performed art songs and spirituals on “Live from Hochstein” with Michael Landrum. In 2016, he received a scholarship to develop a lecture recital centering on the life and spirituals of H.T. Burleigh and the composers that followed in his footsteps.
Admission is $5 for students, $10 for senior citizens and $12 for adults. Tickets are available at NHS, the Newark and Lyons branches of Lyons National Bank, and Wegmans, as well as at the door.
The NHS Jazz Band and Downbeat will perform in the gym at 6:40 p.m. Concessions will be sold by the Newark Music Boosters. Call (315) 332-3200, ext. 3140 for information.
