Russ Harris, president of the Newark Central School District Board of Education, received the 2019 Alex Eligh Service Award at the 49th annual Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce awards dinner at the Newark Elks Club.
The annual award is given in memory of Alex Eligh, who was the executive director of the Newark Community Center for 27 years.
Harris served on the Board of Education from 1993 to 2003, and was re-elected to a fourth three-year term in May 2014. He is serving his fifth term on the board and fourth year as president. Harris is vice president of the Four-County School Boards Association.
Harris has served as the Newark Rotary Club’s youth exchange officer for the last five years and is the Denmark youth exchange officer for Rotary District 7120. He is serving his second term on the Newark Public Library board.
He serves on the board of directors for the Drumlins Radio Club. Harris is the lead volunteer examiner for the Amateur Radio FCC testing group in Ontario and Wayne counties, an American Radio Relay League volunteer instructor, and a member of Wayne and Ontario County RACES, MARS, SHARES, and SHAred RESources.
