Deputies say Alan Schultheis killed himself on Friday, Nov. 22 inside Steuben County Jail. The 64-year-old jumped from a second-floor area inside the jail.
BATH — Alan Schultheis, the 64-year-old Hornell man charged Nov. 4 with fatally stabbing an Arc of Steuben client, committed suicide at the Steuben County Jail Friday according to the sheriff's office.
Schultheis, who appeared in Hornell City Court for a preliminary hearing earlier Friday in the death of 60-year-old Jay Sprague, allegedly jumped from a second-floor area inside the jail. Schultheis was taken to a hospital in Dansville where he died.
“What we believe happened, and what our investigation has turned up, is that Mr. Schultheis chose another, another decision that ended in tragedy,” the Seneca County sheriff said. “He climbed to the second tier of the jail and jumped off, landing on the concrete floor, and was transported to Noyes Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment and passed at Noyes.
“He succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening.”
Hornell City Court Judge David Coddington has held Schultheis over after the hearing, and the veteran Arc employee faced a certain grand jury murder indictment.
