Two children were killed and their parents injured in the crash Thursday on the Thruway
New York State Police have released the names of the children killed in a chain reaction crash on the New York state Thruway in Seneca County Thursday morning.
Sisters Maryella Annal, 11, and Elizabeth Annal, 9, of Baldwinsville, Onondaga County, died at the scene when the minivan they were riding in was rear-ended by a pickup driven by Abraham Hara, 73, of Geneva, Ontario County, said Trooper Mark O'Donnell.
Investigators said that they believe that traffic was slowing for a lane closure when a pickup failed to slow down and rear-ended a westbound minivan. The minivan struck a car and the car struck a tractor-trailer.
O'Donnell said the girls' parents — Thomas and Maureen Annal — were in the front seat of the minivan and suffered serious injuries. They were flown to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their medical conditions were not available.
Police said both girls were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The driver of the car, a 25-year-old Elmira woman, was taken to Geneva General Hospital with minor injuries. Hara, in the pickup, and the tractor-trailer driver were not injured.
Troopers are investigating the crash. Charges are pending.
