Water rescue reported on Sodus Bay

The operator of a sinking canoe was rescued by a good Samaritan and soon taken to shore by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Marine patrol on July 4, according to deputies. The rescue happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Sodus Bay south of Oak Park Marina. The Wayne County Office of Sheriff Marine Patrol responded to the report of a vessel taking on water in that area.

According to deputies, canoe operator, Joyce A. Pentycofe, 63, of Lyons, was wearing a life jacket and had been rescued from the water by a good Samaritan while a second person called 911. Pentycofe was transferred to the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol and transported to shore while her canoe and other items were recovered and transported by another Sheriff’s marine unit.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by North Rose Fire Department Water Rescue and The United States Coast Guard.
