Man faces charges in fatal 2019 Wayne County crash
A Town of Rose man faces manslaughter, vehicular homicide and other charges in connection with a crash last year that claimed the life of two people and an unborn child.
Christopher M. Kirkey, 37, was arrested at his residence Thursday by Wayne County deputies and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, second-degree vehicular manslaughter (two counts), aggravated vehicular homicide and second-degree manslaughter (two counts). He was charged on an indictment warrant filed after grand jury proceedings earlier in the week.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Kirkey was involved in a motor vehicle accident in May 2019 on Savannah Spring Lake Road that claimed the lives of Kayla Mettler, 27, her unborn child, and Michael Schute, 32, all of Rose. Deputies at the time said the eastbound vehicle went off the road, struck a guard rail and a bridge abutment, and landed in Crusoe Creek.
Kirkey will be arraigned in Wayne County Superior Court.
