An Onondaga County woman is facing federal charges after prosecutors say she threatened to kill a New York congressman.

Bethann Marie Wallace, 48, of Baldwinsville was charged with interstate communication of a threat.

Prosecutors say on July 10 the Washington D.C. office of Congressman John Katko (R, NY-24) received a threatening voicemail that included a threat to kill Katko.

The office reported the threat to the United States Capitol Police’s Threat Assessment Section, which investigated the incident with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Prosecutors say the agencies traced the phone number back to Wallace.

Katko’s security detail was increased as a result of the threat according to prosecutors.

If convicted, Wallace faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.

The 24th District includes Wayne, Cayuga and Onondaga counties and part of Oswego County.
